What is inhalation sedation?

Inhalation sedation is a method in which volatile anaesthetics such as sevoflurane or isoflurane are used to sedate the patient. Unlike traditional intravenous sedation, inhalation sedation allows precise control of the depth of sedation and provides faster patient wake-up once therapy is stopped.

In recent years inhalation sedation has become increasingly popular in intensive care units across Europe, particularly for patients requiring prolonged mechanical ventilation.

The MIRUS™ system

MIRUS™ is a modern electronic volatile anaesthetic delivery system intended for use with intensive care or anaesthesia ventilators. The system automatically calculates and delivers the required quantity of anaesthetic according to the patient’s ventilation parameters.

Faster wake-up

Volatile anaesthetics have highly predictable pharmacokinetics. Once sedation is stopped the anaesthetic is eliminated mainly through the lungs, allowing the patient to regain consciousness sooner and reducing the risk of prolonged sedation.

Precise control of sedation

MIRUS™ continuously analyses ventilation parameters and automatically adjusts anaesthetic delivery to maintain the chosen level of sedation.

Reduced use of intravenous sedatives

Inhalation sedation can reduce the need for large doses of propofol or other intravenous sedatives, which in some cases helps optimise the sedation strategy for intensive care patients.

LISA 44 — the next-generation reflector

LISA 44 is an MDR-certified single-use reflector system intended for use with MIRUS™. It efficiently reflects anaesthetic gases back into the patient’s breathing cycle for reuse, reducing anaesthetic consumption and environmental pollution. A single LISA 44 can be used for up to 7 days.
